From the hilltop, the view is breathtaking: the vast sea, the wild expanse, and the glittering solinas (salt pans) create a scene of surreal elegance.
Exploring the Istrian Peninsula
The Istrian peninsula, with its diverse ownership, is a fascinating microcosm. Slovenia's coastline, though brief, boasts vibrant seaside towns and hilltop villages. My stay at Kmetija Medljan, a farm nestled in the hills, offered a glimpse into traditional Slovenian life. The Kodarin family's hospitality, from fresh farm-to-table breakfasts to the peaceful surroundings, transported me back in time.
The Saltworks Museum and Beyond
The Saltworks Museum provided an insightful look into the history of the Sečovlje salt pans. Professor Flavio Bonin's explanation of the salt-making process highlighted the quality and uniqueness of Istrian salt. The solinas, with their stark beauty, also serve as a vital wildlife sanctuary. This blend of industry and nature is a testament to the region's rich ecological diversity.
Medieval Piran and Its Venetian Legacy
Piran, a medieval gem, showcases the influence of the Venetian Republic. The elegant architecture, from the painted houses to the culinary scene, reflects this heritage. Izola, with its relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, is a delight. The DeGrassi hotel, my base, offered a comfortable stay. Ljubljanska Ulica, with its artists' workshops and colorful houses, is a vibrant street. The tiny museum provided a glimpse into Izola's history, including its rivalry with Piran. The ebike tour through the surrounding countryside, with its vineyards and orchards, was a highlight, offering a unique perspective on the region.
Evenings in Izola and Local Produce
Evenings in Izola were a treat, from the fresh rosé at Manzioli wine bar to the delicious feast at Bujol. The local produce and award-winning wines are a testament to the region's culinary excellence. The Pier of Tastes food market, a monthly event, showcases Istrian food producers and their wares. My tour with Nina Golob introduced me to artisan producers, from Tilen Praprotnik's indigenous grape varieties to Korenika & Moškon's olive oils.
