NASA is at a pivotal moment, evaluating its logistics strategy for the lunar Gateway. The space agency is considering alternative approaches to the Gateway Logistics Services program, which aims to transport cargo to and from the Gateway, similar to the services supporting the International Space Station. In 2020, NASA selected SpaceX for this program, with their Dragon XL spacecraft as the proposed solution. However, development has been slow, partly due to delays in the Gateway program itself.
Mark Wiese, manager of the Deep Space Logistics program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, highlighted the importance of timing in commercial service procurement. He noted that early procurement might lead to dormant resources. NASA has authorized SpaceX to proceed with the first Gateway logistics mission in 2023, but a potential change in the logistics architecture proposed by SpaceX is under review. The agency aims to decide on this revision by mid-2025.
One intriguing possibility being studied is the use of SpaceX's Starship to support Gateway logistics instead of Dragon XL. This could provide insights into SpaceX's commercial plans and their potential role in logistics within cislunar space. However, the Gateway program faced a setback last year due to the administration's budget proposal to cancel it. Congress, however, stepped in and funded the program in July.
Wiese emphasized the need for comprehensive cislunar transportation solutions for successful logistics. NASA has initiated short-term studies of orbital transfer vehicle concepts with six companies, aiming to operate in cislunar space and other challenging orbits. These studies, valued at $1.4 million, involve Arrow Science and Technology, Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Impulse Space, Rocket Lab, and United Launch Alliance.
With the studies completed and reviewed, NASA is now evaluating the next steps. The goal is to enable multiple companies to perform logistics deliveries in cislunar space. NASA expects to make decisions on any further actions after the Artemis 2 mission, scheduled for early February. This strategic evaluation is crucial to ensure the Gateway program's success and the overall sustainability of lunar operations.
